Even the nebulous blackhole of Kayako Saeki’s rage in the Ju-On franchise, while not directly tech related, envelopes any and all who come close – a figurative summation of a fear of close connection in the modern age. However, one film most perfectly encapsulates this particular zeitgeist, with its relevance only increasing with every passing year, its tendrils of dread coiled around the roots of all Internet horror since. Grave robbing, torture, possessed nuns, and a satanic Sabbath: Benjamin Christensen’s legendary Häxan uses a series of dramatic vignettes to explore the scientific hypothesis that the witches of the Middle Ages suffered the same hysteria as turn-of-the-twentieth-century psychiatric patients. But the film itself is far from serious—instead, it’s a witches’ brew of the scary, gross, and darkly humorous.
