Rated
R (for strong bloody violence, sexual content and language.)
Directed by Ryan Coogler
Starring Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Delroy Lindo, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, Wunmi Mosaku, Michael B. Jordan
One of the most confident and original entrees into the realm of American Studio Blockbuster cinema in this century, Ryan Coogler's SINNERS is more than it seems.
With a story straight out of a traveling blues song at its core the film transforms its traumas into something presently drawn out of a deep well of history yet simultaneously called back from the future. At different moments one could describe it as a drama, a horror, a period piece, or a love story, but just one would sell it short. Despite the hallmarks of many genres it rises above definition to the elevation of multifaceted art.
The success of SINNERS is thanks to a strong independent vision from Writer/Director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) and stellar performances from Michael B. Jordan, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Hailee Steinfeld, and Jack O'Connell to name a few in an excellent ensemble cast. Not to mention the impressive new talent, Miles Caton.
Exploring the nature of community, safe spaces, cultural appropriation, and exhibiting the desire to connect across generations through music and storytelling, SINNERS is a rare piece of art in modern American Studio cinema. One that makes you wonder what kind of real art might come if Capitalism and Industry didn't live in a constant state of petrified fear.
